Summer often brings images of sunny days, family vacations, and a break from school routines. For many children, it’s a time of rest and play. But for children living in foster care, summer can present unique challenges that make this season especially difficult.
Without the structure and support that school provides, children in foster care may face increased instability during the summer months. Some may experience changes in placement, disruption in services, or less access to trusted adults who can advocate for their needs. For these vulnerable youth, summer is not always a carefree season.
That’s where CASA volunteers make an invaluable difference. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) volunteers are trained advocates who serve as a steady, supportive presence in a child’s life — all year long. During the summer months, when other supports may be less accessible, CASA volunteers continue to visit children, attend court hearings, connect with caregivers and service providers, and ensure that a child’s best interests remain at the forefront.
These volunteers provide consistency, care, and a powerful voice for children navigating difficult situations. They help keep children safe, advocate for their educational, medical, and emotional needs, and support efforts to achieve permanency — whether that’s reunification with family, adoption, or another permanent plan.
In Louisiana alone, hundreds of children rely on CASA volunteers for this vital support every day. And as summer rolls on, the need for passionate, committed volunteers remains just as strong. As of today, there are 29 children in Iberville, Pointe Coupee and West Baton Rouge who are waiting on a CASA.
If you’ve ever thought about becoming a CASA volunteer, summer is a great time to begin. Training sessions are designed to fit busy schedules and prepare you to make a lasting impact on a child’s life. Your advocacy can be the difference between uncertainty and stability, fear and hope.
Together, we can help children in foster care experience the safety, support, and opportunities they deserve — no matter the season.
