A New School Year, A New Opportunity: Advocate for Foster Children with CASA

As the new school year approaches, many children are filled with excitement and anticipation. However, for youth in foster care, this time can be filled with uncertainty and challenges. At CASA of the 18th JDC, we recognize the unique obstacles these children face and are dedicated to providing the support they need to succeed in their educational journey.
Children in foster care often experience disruptions in their education due to placement changes and other instability. Research shows that youth in foster care are more likely to face educational challenges, including lower graduation rates and higher absenteeism. CASA volunteers help provide a sense of stability by being a consistent presence in the child’s life, advocating for their educational needs, and ensuring they have access to resources such as tutoring, counseling, and extracurricular activities.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers play a crucial role in advocating for the educational needs of children in foster care. These dedicated volunteers work closely with the child’s teachers, school counselors, and other educational professionals to ensure that each child receives the appropriate resources and support. CASA volunteers attend school meetings, advocate for necessary services, and monitor the child’s progress to help them achieve academic success.
As we begin a new school year, we encourage members of our community to consider becoming a CASA volunteer. Get Involved: Become a CASA Volunteer
Becoming a CASA volunteer involves a few important steps:
Application and Interview: Fill out an application and participate in an interview to ensure you’re a good fit for the program.
Background Check: Complete a background check to ensure the safety of the children we serve.
Training: Participate in a comprehensive training program to prepare you for your role as an advocate.
Ongoing Support: Receive ongoing support and guidance from CASA staff as you work with children and navigate the child welfare system.
